Old Market Square

From the 16th century until World War II, the most prominent feature of the town of Šilutė was the massive markets held in the Old Market Square. Fishermen, farmers, and merchants from nearby settlements, as well as traders from Königsberg and Klaipėda, and Samogitians from Greater Lithuania would gather there. Next to the market square, the first tavern was built, which is believed to have sparked the expansion of the town of Šilutė. The famous fish market operated in the square for several centuries.
The Old Market Square in Šilutė is still surrounded by old buildings. Its layout, only slightly altered by an embankment built along the bend of the Šyša River and the stone pavement beneath the asphalt, has remained intact. Located near the Šyša bend, the Šilutė Manor, and the iron bridge on the road to Rusnė, the square served as a marketplace for almost 500 years.
The Old Market Square in Šilutė is one of the town’s oldest historical sites, associated with significant stages of its development. In 2022, the square was renovated.
