Memorial Stone to Martynas Mažvydas

In the village of Laukstėnai, by the Žemaičių Naumiestis–Gardamas–Švėkšna road, stands a memorial stone with the inscription:
“In these surroundings of Švėkšna, Gardamas, and Žemaičių Naumiestis, around the year 1510, was born Martynas Mažvydas, the author of the first Lithuanian book. This memorial stone, unveiled on May 7, 2001, marks the birthplace (presumed) of the author of the first Lithuanian book.”
Mažvydas compiled, wrote, and created the first six Lithuanian books and booklets, all published in Königsberg. The first Lithuanian book, The Catechism, was published in 1547.
