Senosios gaisrinės pastatas Šilutėje

In 1897, a volunteer fire brigade was established in the Šilokarčema district. The owner of Šilutė Manor, Hugo Scheu, donated a plot of land to the town, where in 1911 the fire station building was constructed. At that time, the area was the lowest and most marshy part of Šilokarčema, located next to the now-disappeared Šret stream.
The ground floor housed the fire brigade’s garage, and the administrative board was located on the second floor. The fire brigade consisted of volunteers, equipped with a single hand-operated pump and four horses.
Built in the Art Nouveau style with the restrained ornamentation typical of the Klaipėda region, the building is a heritage monument of architecture and history. Having survived both world wars and stood for over 100 years, the fire station has preserved its original appearance. Until 2020, it housed the Šilutė Fire and Rescue Service, which has since moved to newly constructed premises nearby.
