“Depart” project study visit in Thessaloniki

Participants of the “Depart” project studies

Representatives of Šilutė District Municipality participated in the study visit of the “Depart” project in Thessaloniki (Greece) on 4–5 December 2025, where we learned about solutions for the development of sports tourism, sustainability integration and community engagement practices.

During the visit, we gained detailed insights into how Greece develops strategies for visiting protected areas, adapts sports routes for different social groups, and how sports events are used to strengthen city identity, cultural sites and the local economy. Particularly valuable were insights on event communication, visitor flow management, accessibility improvements and partnerships between local authorities, universities and community initiatives.

We also had the opportunity to hear expert presentations on environmental integration in sports tourism, waste reduction at large-scale events, the importance of air quality monitoring, and innovative nature and cultural education formats that successfully engage residents and visitors.

The visit provided many practical ideas that we will be able to apply to strengthen the sports tourism potential of Šilutė District, to develop attractive, sustainable and resource-efficient activities, and to improve the organisation of municipal events and tourism.
