German Culture Days in Šilutė 2025

From September 27–30, 2025, German Culture Days will take place in Šilutė. The events are dedicated to remembering the writer Hermann Sudermann.

Programme:

September 27
11:00 – Presentation of Hermann Sudermann’s book “Journey to Tilsit” (“Kelionė į Tilžę”).
Initiator – Šilutė Hermann Sudermann Society.
With the participation of the sacred music choir “Laudamus” of Šilutė Cultural Center (led by Irena Šemeklienė).
The presentation will take place at the F. Bajoraitis Public Library (Tilžės St. 10, Šilutė) (Tilžės g. 10, Šilutė).

September 30
German Language Day in Šilutė district schools “Ö as in Deutsch?” (“Ö kaip vokiškai?”).
Initiators: Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Lithuania, Goethe-Institut, Central Agency for Schools Abroad, German Academic Exchange Service, and German-Baltic Chamber of Commerce.
Participants: students of Šilutė First Gymnasium, Šilutė Vydūnas Gymnasium, Žemaičių Naumiestis Gymnasium, and Šilutė Pamarys Progymnasium.
The campaign will take place in Šilutė district schools.

11:00 – Lesson of the local history club of Šilutė Pamarys Progymnasium primary classes at the Hermann Sudermann monument.
Location: H. Sudermann monument (Lietuvininkų St. 21, Šilutė) (Lietuvininkų g. 21, Šilutė).

12:00 – Guided tour of Šilutė Hugo Šojus Museum “Following in the Footsteps of Hermann Sudermann” (“Hermano Zudermano takais”).
The tour is free of charge.

18:00 – Šilutė Chamber Drama Theater presents the two-part play “Jonas and Erdmė” (“Jonas ir Erdmė”).
Based on H. Sudermann’s novella, the play tells a 150-year-old story of life – flooded love, sorrow, hope, death, and unending struggle.
