Šilutė First (Former Herder) Gymnasium

In 1864, a higher boys’ school—called a family-type school—was established in what was then Šilokarčema. In 1917, a committee was formed to establish a gymnasium, and on April 16, 1918, Šilokarčema Gymnasium-Lyceum began its operations. It was named after Herder. The first class of graduates completed their studies in 1926.
In 1928, a committee was formed to build a new school building. The land for construction was donated by landowner Hugo Scheu, and the project was designed by local architect Kurt Gutknecht. The Herder Gymnasium building was officially opened on October 11, 1930.
The Šilutė Herder Gymnasium operated until the autumn of 1944. After World War II, the premises became home to Šilutė First Gymnasium, later transformed into a secondary school. In 2004, the school was officially renamed Šilutė First Gymnasium, emphasizing its historical importance to the town and region.
