In the village of Laukst\u0117nai, by the \u017demai\u010di\u0173 Naumiestis\u2013Gardamas\u2013\u0160v\u0117k\u0161na road, stands a memorial stone with the inscription:
“In these surroundings of \u0160v\u0117k\u0161na, Gardamas, and \u017demai\u010di\u0173 Naumiestis, around the year 1510, was born Martynas Ma\u017evydas, the author of the first Lithuanian book. This memorial stone, unveiled on May 7, 2001, marks the birthplace (presumed) of the author of the first Lithuanian book.”
Ma\u017evydas compiled, wrote, and created the first six Lithuanian books and booklets, all published in K\u00f6nigsberg.
