In 1594, the innkeeper of \u0160ilokar\u010dema (now \u0160ilut\u0117) was granted the privilege to operate a tavern, with the obligation to keep a post horse or pay 8 marks annually. At the time, mail was transported from inn to inn, carrying not only letters and parcels but also passengers. \u0160ilokar\u010dema was located on the postal route between Klaip\u0117da and Tilsit. In 1718, the Klaip\u0117da postal authority established a post station in \u0160ilokar\u010dema.
From 1850, mail delivery was leased to private individuals. In \u0160ilokar\u010dema, the lessee was the manor owner Radke. When the Tilsit\u2013Klaip\u0117da railway opened in 1875, horse-drawn postal services in \u0160ilokar\u010dema were discontinued.
The \u0160ilut\u0117 post office building was constructed in 1909 and was considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the town. It is a two-storey masonry structure of rectangular layout, featuring a complex volume with a mansard roof and an impressive main entrance.
